Planning for a Sustainable Future
In 2021, ensuring Renton planned for a green future and maintained its green spaces were my top priorities. Renton is part of the beautiful Pacific Northwest oasis. Our city is in a strong place to improve our quality of life by reducing our waste, emissions, and building climate resistance.
✅ Review and Update Renton’s Clean Economy Strategy from 2011: As a member of the Utilities Committee all four years while on council, we approved Renton’s Clean Economy Strategy 2.0 in 2023 after seeking public feedback. Renton’s Clean Economy Strategy 2.0 is a roadmap for sustainability, focusing on transportation, energy, waste, water, and community resilience. It outlines 32 actions to cut emissions, create green jobs, improve transit, and enhance emergency preparedness.
✅ Support and Advocacy for Local Composting: Renton adopted Ordinance 6111, a Compost Procurement Ordinance in December 2023. It mandates the city to integrate compost into landscaping, construction, erosion prevention, and green infrastructure projects. Renton prioritizes locally produced, high-quality compost but exempts usage if it’s unavailable, non-compliant, or too costly. The city must educate residents on compost benefits and report compost use biennially.
✅ Current Study of our Recycling Effectiveness: Beginning March 17th through May 9th, 2025 Renton’s Public Works is conducting a Recycling Contamination Study to help assess and educate residents on effective recycling practice. The “Feet on the Street” recycling cart tagging project will improve the quality of recycling with our neighborhoods.
